Affiliate Marketing Tips: Dos And Don’ts 2016

Many people get involved with Affiliate marketing so that they can begin to make money online selling products, even though they don’t have any products of their own.

how-earnest-affiliate-marketing-works1-300x244It’s a great concept!!! Let’s break it down in 4 simple steps:

  1. You have an excellent channel of traffic (Blog, Youtube, Twitter Account, etc.)
  2. You place special links that contain tracking codes within your content to drive traffic to products that will offer a solution to your niche audience’s needs.
  3. Your audience clicks the link, travels over to the website and then begins to make a purchase eventually or opts into a list.
  4. You write excellent content and drive traffic to that content. Sellers pay you to creatively inject their get PAID a % of commission on the sales.

I know, I know, it is the coolest thing since…ever.

However, let’s, please keep in mind that there are some simple do’s and some don’ts that you should follow if you plan to remain successful:

Do Some Darn Research

Yes, I said it, first things first, you need to do some darn research. So many people just say, “Hey! I want to make loads of money online with affiliate marketing!”

So then they just jump right in without knowing a real clue or having a game plan. If you want to be even a tad bit successful affiliate marketer you must do research so that you understand how it works.

Like any other job, there are vital facts that all marketers need to know before starting in this line of work such as how you have to do some research!

First, you need to study how even to make money online, which is what brought you here hopefully, so good job.

Next, You need to gather the knowledge it takes to understand how to convert visitors traffic into buyers, etc.  and you need to understand the niche market that you are trying to sell.

I mean it’s pretty much common sense, right? Well, you know how that goes.

Don’t Just Toss Something Together And Wait For The Money.

man asleep at the computer Dreamstime.comOk, so I know you are eager and ready to start rolling in the big $$$. So you just finished reading your awesome book on affiliate marketing, and you’re all set to put this stuff into action!

Right now you may be considering the following steps:

1. Buy this awesome theme with these cool design features

2. I’ll buy all these PLR articles

3. Use an article spinner and slap them into the website

4. Use some graphics I made in paint

5. Sit back and wait.

No, No, No.

Make plans and do research, hey, you remember that last tip right?

Think about what it is your audience enjoys and what they need.

You want to keep your content full of juicy details that they have been looking all over the internet in hopes of finding their solutions.

They want to see hard work and research that you did so they could spend a little less time searching and more time just reading.

Traffic converts for people they trust and building that come from consistently providing good content.

Your results reflect the amount of time and effort you put in. Quality work follows careful planning and researched actions when you fail to accomplish this the competition will leave you behind in the dust.

Don’t Get Caught Up In Training!

Something that I have struggled with is getting stuck in student mode. I know it sounds crazy who in the world gets stuck in being a student. Well, here I was reading blog articles non-stop, jumping from all these e-mail training courses, learning everything I

While it is good to gain knowledge,  I wasn’t taking any action. I was getting caught up in all these different methods and confused about what to do and where to go.

Uhhh … Uhhhh… ok… slow down.

So don’t just read, at some point, you need to TAKE ACTION.

Don’t Believe Every Word That Your Pretty Little Eyes Take In

When we are beginning affiliates, sometimes we are naïve!

Keep your scam radar ALERT! Be diligent, and cross-reference statements if possible. Look online for reviews and find out about other peoples experience.

scam_alert5When you are reading reviews, read them closely and read other content on their site to see the voice behind the posting.

Not every strategy works and not every guru has that “top secret” way to make millions overnight.

Overnight Millionaires just don’t exist in this industry, I am not saying it can’t happen, but what I am saying is don’t buy into some unique formula that will make you rich overnight. It is not  REAL!

Hard work and dedication make you real streams of passive income that can make you the big 6-7 figure checks that you see in your dreams. This vision may take months to years to manifest, but the money will grow and last just as long with the proper affiliate marketing approach.

Do Promote Products That You Wouldn’t Actually Buy Or Already Own

When I first started, I was so eager to make money that I decided to hype my story up and just chase after the highest converting products no matter how grimy the money was.

I was like show me the BENJAMINS!

Well, that wasn’t  a good idea. For one it’s not moral, that was the first thing that had me backpedaling. Secondly, it doesn’t exactly keep your readers happy or coming back to read your dishonest opinions.

Another reason to promote good products, you know besides the obvious moral stances, is because it’s so easy to promote and sell a product you believe in naturally.

But maybe that is because your guilty conscious isn’t eating you alive.

Do Be Ready To Adapt And Change

The internet is rapidly changing all the time. It is an ever growing network of evolving information. Internet marketing thrives on this and marketers who can not keep up fall off quickly. Where will you land?

An example of this is when Google made updates to their search engine rules and requirements a few years back.

Trends change and sometimes niches get overcrowded. The best way to combat this currently is to be an authority blogger that focuses on delivering quality content that retains regular traffic.

Either way, times change, and new techniques develop to stay ahead of the pack in a competitive industry.

Don’t Spam Your Leads!

no-spam-logoI mean this is rather basic internet etiquette to me. Who enjoys spam? Exactly.

When you run your email campaigns make sure that you are offering reliable information to your leads. Give them something they want and need. Then add to what you taught them with something that they can purchase and grow even more.

Don’t just drown them with this sales page promoting the latest thing on the market. Warm them up and slide in that affiliate link at the end all nonchalant with a smile.

You shouldn’t come off as a pushy sales person. Don’t be the stereotypical used car sales man. Nobody wants to be that guy or to be spammed in their inbox by that guy.

Don’t produce that political style “negative” ad campaigns

Look man badmouthing and bashing other products to hype another product up goes back to that snake-like nature we have already discussed. So it’s just not a good idea.

It makes you seem like a biased punk who just doesn’t want to give a truly honest review. See there is it is again. Honesty. People want to buy from people they trust and believe give honest advice and services.

When your evaluate products you should give honest views on the pros and cons. When you hype your products emphasize on the qualities that make them stand out.

If you can’t do that well, let’s look for a new product to promote.

There are Thousands!

Do Maintain A Patient And Optimistic Perspective

Attitude-successRemember Affiliate Marketing IS NOT a get rich quick scheme. If you’re looking for a get rich quick, go somewhere else, those are usually scams offers.

You have to make time to gain experience and knowledge in what you are doing. It is smart to take advice and join a community of people who are in the same field so they can be there to support you.

It’s what I did.

Just keep in mind:

  1. Success isn’t going to happen overnight
  2. Success is going to take a lot of work and a lot of writing
  3. Success is going to take time to grow and develop
  4. You will probably fail a bunch before you succeed
  5. If you put the time and effort in, you will succeed

Do Keep up Communications With Your Partners

Whether you run into issues, want to get some information, or want to say thanks, keeping a stable communication between you and your affiliate partners will help you along the way.

Great affiliates will help you sell their product and therefore help you make a lot of money. This mutual relationship is set up to allow both people win. Keep the bond strong, and your income stream will reflect that.

Do Track Your Efforts

It’s smart to use a decent traffic tracking system to keep a record of the sales you send to your partners. Sometimes people make mistakes you know, its kind of like paying attention to your punch out a card in the 9to5 lifestyle that we all want(ed) to escape.

Do Join An Affiliate Network

Affiliate networks bring reliable payment sources to the table. While 1-on-1 relationships with affiliate partners can be rewarding with bonuses and better support for selling their products, sometimes dealing with waiting for payments to clear and tracking of your efforts get lost.

Affiliate networks act as a middle man between the marketers & sellers and handle everything through their system keeping things streamlined, and they typically handle the payments.

You also have access to a library of excellent products that have statistics about the conversions and average payouts. This information should be used when deciding what affiliate program to promote.

I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance. – Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple.

Very good advice. You do not get something for nothing in this world. If you want success and freedom, you need to fight for it. Working hard is the key to any successful venture.

Have you found success in affiliate marketing? What is the key to your success? Is there a program that you recommend or training that has set itself apart for you?

    • August 31, 2016 at 12:11 pm

I have found a lot of success. The key is most definitely to have a constant drive towards meeting your goals and never giving in to your doubts or negative thoughts. Setbacks should be catapulted into lessons learned and hurdles jumped. The best program I know of is Wealthy Affiliates. You can read my review here:

    Hello Todd,

Well done ! I mean great post- easy to read , detailed and thorough. I actually like your whole website. Every post and page on it are in great interest to me so I read them all. I honestly can say that the content is really engaging and I will definetely visit it regularly 🙂

    • September 2, 2016 at 8:50 am

Thanks a lot it is just a start I can’t wait to write some more content. Your feedback means a lot to me.

  • September 5, 2016 at 6:26 am

Well said Todd. A lot of internet marketers are using the “start something and then sit back and relax” approach out there to lure even more internet marketers. I think it definitely gives people a wrong perception on the industry. I would think giving a clear perception on how much hard work one has to put in before finding success is crucial in educating the next wave of internet marketers. I personally believe in hard work bring results.

    • September 5, 2016 at 6:26 am

Yes thank you! True success doesn’t just happen over night and that is why everyone isn’t just successful, because if it were that easy everyone would be on it..It takes hard work and dedication to get to where you want to be!

    Hey Todd,

This was an awesome article to read and very easy to understand. I liked how you mentioned not to get stuck in student mode and take action. I really do believe this is one of the best ways to learn. Simply putting yourself out there and learning from trial and error.

Do you think some niches are easier to make profit from than others?

    • September 5, 2016 at 11:53 pm

You know I haven’t really had the chance to experiment in a lot of niches but from what I understand Almost ANY niche is profitable, like even the ones that are over saturated. It all matters about how you present your information

  • September 5, 2016 at 6:32 am

These are really good dos and don’t for the would be internet marketer. I’ve tried IM a few times in the past and went through some trainings that were more useful than others. It does seem that paralysis by analysis was a big problem for me as I needed to understand the whole IM world before jumping in. I guess sometimes jumping in with both feet is the best thing to do.

    • September 5, 2016 at 11:56 pm

Yes.. the theme and the voice of this blog is supposed to align with my newbie IM stance and helping others at my level or under me throughout the growth. I still struggle with info overload time to time but then I take a day off and realign with what I have learned. Keeping notes and drawing a plan is very helpful to keep you on track.

Affiliate marketing is one of the greatest forms of online business because you don’t need to develop your own product or service to sell. That being said, it takes hard work and dedication. When you run a website, it’s a never-ending process of driving traffic and converting that traffic into buyers. Affiliate marketing is my personal favorite monetization strategy – do you think beginners can benefit from other forms?

    • September 5, 2016 at 11:59 pm

I think if someone has a skill especially in graphic design, web programming/design, and writing they can capitalize on these skills through freelance networks and benefit but when it comes to monetizing your site. I have heard of now better way other than selling your own product, Affiliate marketing is of course the second best thing because you do not have to create the product. Although if you create the product you could always use affiliate marketing to SELL your product. Some of the best marketers use both sides of affiliate marketing to generate passive streams of income.

  • September 24, 2016 at 12:14 am

I am one of those people who jumped head first into affiliate marketing. Ignorant and ambitious not knowing what was ahead. I’m happy to say I have learned from my mistakes and I am do much better now.

Like you said, affiliate marketing is a great way to do business but without careful research, you won’t achieve much.

    • September 24, 2016 at 12:15 am

Thanks for your feedback. I’m so happy to have found affiliate marketing.

  • September 24, 2016 at 1:28 am

Awesome. Affiliate marketing is as much about the technical side as it is about taking action and just trying and not getting caught up in analysis paralysis.

In terms of promoting products, just give your honest assessment but offer an affiliate link. Some people will just buy a product no matter how much bad press and publicity it got and they’re dead set on it.

    • September 24, 2016 at 1:33 am

I agree I have a few products lined up to review that I am not an affiliate for but show big signs of risk or have too many upsells. I will give an honest review about all of them because I want the guest on the site to trust my word and know that I am not trying to just make a quick buck selling the next hot IM product.

  • October 1, 2016 at 5:32 am

When it comes to internet marketing, I agree that individuals need the right training, tools, and support in order to succeed. The best thing that beginners can do is take action on the concepts they’re learning as soon as possible. Watching tutorials and learning concepts on paper only gets you so far – taking action is what will eventually put money in your pocket. In your opinion, what are some of the best resources for research and training within the affiliate marketing space?

    • October 2, 2016 at 9:25 pm

Thanks for the comment! I would say IMO the best resource for learning what you need to know to do well in affiliate marketing would be Wealthy Affiliate.

  • October 21, 2016 at 11:57 pm

Yup, that’s (some of) me. Been there and don’t that – especially chasing after training and ‘free’ stuff. At one point, I subscribed to 10 different bloggers, all claiming to show me the right techniques to affiliate marketing success.

Guess what? They just sit on my inbox and I still haven’t open those emails after 2 years. Crazy right? I think the abundance that the internet provides has made us (at least me) an online hoarder. Not a good habit and not productive at all.

    • October 23, 2016 at 11:19 pm

LOL, yea I have multiple folders of unread emails from multiple list.

  • October 26, 2016 at 12:20 am

    Hi Todd,

This is a well thought-out and informative step-by-step plan for anyone who has been considering becoming an affiliate marketer.

I am fairly new to affiliate marketing, and I had to laugh about being stuck in “student mode”– (guilty as charged). That, and being distracted by “shiny objects”.

I agree with you completely about making your blog posts conversational in style and being your authentic self. For me, doing that is just a more satisfying writing experience.

I am grateful you made the point about honesty. In my map of the world, it is a critical component of success on so many levels.

I look forward to reading more from you. Thank you for all the information on your site.

    I wish you continued success!

Very interesting read – and also a real eye opener at the same time!
I think that research is the main one that catches newbies out – they think ‘oh weight loss – that’s popular’ and go right ahead promoting products!
Well it’s popular alright – and it’s also near enough impossible to break into!
Great article – really enlightening read!

    • November 14, 2016 at 6:19 pm

Yea sometimes getting into those topics are too competitive but if you use an interesting angle then it makes it different and interesting. An example of this is Nerd Fitness who took a unique nerdy angle to maintaining fitness.

  • November 27, 2016 at 11:55 am

I really like affiliate marketing and I currently do it as a part of my online portfolio. I’m always looking for ways to improve things – especially traffic and conversions – and that’s how I came across your post here.

You offer some good advice for all marketers and I intend on applying some of the tips you have offered. I want my affiliate marketing to be as successful as your business.

    • November 27, 2016 at 5:19 pm

Thanks Darren. Just work on it everyday, set goals, stay focused, and follow through.

  • March 23, 2017 at 3:09 pm

My affiliate blogs were stagnant for so long. I didn’t made any sales and wanted to quit, however I am very hopefull after reading your article. Seems I can see a light and feels excited again. Hope to see my first sale after I will apply what you had said. I appreacite you posted something like this to help us newbie. 🙂

    • May 23, 2017 at 4:25 pm

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Affiliate Marketing is still possible it’s just a lot of persistence.

  • August 18, 2017 at 9:59 pm

    Hi Todd,
You make excellent points particularly when it comes to the importance of doing good research. A couple of months ago, for example, I received an email from a “marketing guru” briefing me on the benefits of “FaceBook Lite “, a marketing technique that is suppose to drive lots of traffic to your website.

I read the reviews about FaceBook Lite and they all seem very positive. However, something still didn’t feel right. I skipped all the positive buzz and went to several sites that report on viruses and scams. While FaceBook Lite wasn’t considered a scam, I found out the program uses a download that is vulnerable to malware that can damage your website.

So, I passed on this Guru’s suggestion. For the sake of establishing trust in your audience and protecting all your hard work, you need to do good research.

Also, your point about not being distracted by training is solid. I find that in order not to feel overwhelmed, I often refer to specific training for a specific problem I am having in real time.

  • August 24, 2017 at 10:22 pm

Todd, great stuff here. Too many just set up the website,l post a few affiliate links and sit back and wait for the cash to roll in. Your best point to me was that you have to make a plan. If you don’t, you’ll be discouraged fast and blame everything on scams. I agree about the training. Eventually, you have to ACT and DO something. Great info here. Thanks for sharing.
